Conference notes

Pastora Martínez: UOC is rethinking its role in front of current challenges. Univerisities in both research and teaching have a lot to say. Digital transformation is an opprtunity to connect knowledge and open it to faster the solutions, we need to tackle global challenges.

Michael Donaldson: "Humanising Technology to Barcelona".  Smart city vision was focused on iot, but we added a new lay, on the smart city adding, smart citizens, but now also how technology for the services of citizens in order to improve quality of life of our citizens. Technology is an important driver to solve these problems.

Ethics and technology: AI, Big Data -- INE case, we need to explain much better what are we doing.

Training citizens on technology. Ateneus de fabricació digital. We work toghether with a lot of institutions in order to interact within technology and ecosysyem. We are the public institution and we have to pursue the common good. All the stakeholders need to work toghether. Big companies are going to look for the business we need to build an environment where we can work toghether. Because wheather we like it or not they are going to...

Lina Galvez:

This digital transformation arises many possibilities to achieve an egalitarian society. This almost zero marginal cost production, the political participation, care issues because technology also allows me to connect with my family thanks to technology. But on the other hand, inequality is increasing. We have a lot of possibilities, but inequalities are increasing in many different aspects: income distribution (monopoly gain: the winner takes all).

The fact that income distribution is increasing that much is not good for our democracy. We have also inequalities rasing among workers. We have an small amount of workers having a lot of autonomy, but we have an increasing amount of poor workers, and then we have platform workers who are even more precarious, which, in gender terms is very important

Also in terms of geographical spaces Madrid is doing it better than Barcelona attracting human capital and talent. London is growing very much and the rest of the country is not, this creates a lot of political and social problems. We have still worldwide inequalities. Inequlity within countries are increasing as well. If you see which jobs are more in danger of this digital revolution, there are more care jobs are not in danger, robots can take care of us but they dont care about us. The emotional part of care is missing in the digital techonolgy.

However, we could keep our labour participation we have a great burden: gender pay gap, gender segregation in labour markets (less paid, worse conditions). There could provoke an increase in gender pay gap which could end up in a decrease in women participation

We have these guys desgining the algortihm with a gender bias. Steritypes are a t the base if these gender inequalities. What we are seeing now is that inequalities increase and probably because we are not giving the right answers to some problems. There are many things that are not well regulated.

Michael donalson was talking as the big brother was the state, the big brother are the big companies, our democracy is endagered becasue of that. They are not paying enough taxes, that would help us to improve services.

Diamond of care (public institutions, market, famiiy and society (the commons). Here the public is specific because it is not only a provider but it aslo designs the rule of the game.

The commons tool, or to promote better share of care work within a family with taxes, or egalitarian policies, paternal leaves etc.

We need to think also on how are we going to approach this new phase of capitalism (Surveillance Capitalism, Susanah Zubboff). They are shaping our mind, pur needs and this is happening after the neoliberal revolution. We are in front of more individualistic answers.

European Parliament Agenda in terms of promoting a better education and active inclusion to all citizens.

The agenda is good, we do not want to leave anyone behind. However, our buget is only 1% of all european union gdp devoted to achieve an egalitarian society form digital trans.

We are landing the h2020 programme from one comission. The new programme still have some of the aspects of the 2020 but now it is mission oriented it has a concrete goal that be have to achieve in a period of time and invloving very diffferent actors (citizens) in the co-desgin of the research. There are 5 missions only. These are the result of many actors deciding which goals are important. Our research is sometimes still far away from society and this program want to fit this gap.

1. Cancer

2. Ocean water

3. Soils, sustainabile agriculture,

4. Climate change

5- Smart and climate netural cities.

To achive and egalitarian society a lot of things can be done from cities.

100 cities will be signing the contract with the EU to arrive to certain goals. There are some experts however saying that electrification of cities should be the key goal.

To Do: In terms of regulations from digital platforms from the European comission. The 2016 agenda collaborative commerce being in the frame of e-commerce and not as a... Then the European Parliament (Marco Dragi, italian) the fisrt time he presented the postition of the europen parliament on the platform economy was here in Barcelona as very proactive . One of the elements that he introduced was that the parliament was keen on egalitarian society promotion, increasing the role of cities in the defintion of the regulation, becasue they do not have that many competences it is important that europe recongnise the cities. This year it is going to be the revision of the ecomernce directive we would like to be in touch an get the vision of cities in this revision.  Dg.growth was leading the provision of the platform economy and wanted ot consult the cities i went to brussles, to present the sharing cities and barcelona though, but the contact in barcelona is not the council of barcelona but the lobby. But later, the europen comission came here the represent the vision of barcelona, and dggrowth as created an specific unit form social economy and have recongised this event as one of the most impritant 10 event in europe this year.

Platform workers ab5 California, we asked the commission if they will follow this approach they did not answer us. future new commission of employment. they want to do an specific regulation to focus on platform work. we have to make sure to give the right definition of each thing, social economy is not florentino perez is doing care economy but not social economy (monica ask). being in as coal sector doesn't mean being social economy, this is something that we have to be aware.  dg growth just the word growth is a huge problem we have to get way of these definitions
