Conference notes
Theoretical framework used to design (people doing things). Set of ideas on how we design and make things together. Design justice talks about how design can foster or replicate systems of opression (gender, race, ability, colonialism, etc.). Basically, how it replicates current inequalities. How design reproduces or challenges the matrix of domination - concept by black feminist movement, how it interwovens with other struggles and how it applies in other locations as well. Has a lot of insights from black feminism movement. In addition, to being a lense, it is a particular designs their impacts get distributed in the sytems of opression. When you are arrested, you run through an automated decision system, a machine learning tool - the pre-trial risk assessment system - that predicts if you are likely to reoffend or not, the judge will take this mark into account your sentence. A black-boxed algorithm defines whether you should be put in a cage or not. ProPublica found out that the algorithm is racist, and black people were more probable to end up worse... This is just one example on how algorithms decision making systems are predicting with biases that damage traditional excluded groups such as black people. It is also a community of practise.
At the Allied Media Conference in 2015 Design Justice Principles started to be developed --> network --> principles
There are nodes popping out in different places inspired by the principles.
The design Justice Principles: (co-designed, revised, released two years ago)
1. We use design to sustain, heal, and empower our communities, as well as to seek liberation from exploitative and oppressive systems. Design justice is much more explicit than orher designs ( participatory etc.), which are good, but none of them are explicit about challenging existing systems.
2. We centred the voices of those who are directly impacted by the outcomes of design process. In the technocratic milleu the people that are most impacted in the table should have a voice in designing these tools such as algorithms.You should include the people that is more impacted on the outcomes.
3. Impact over intentions, anti opressive frameworks. We prioritize design's impact on the community over the intentions of the designer. We prioritze the impact of the most vulnerable people.
4. We view change as emergent from an acountable, accessible, and colaborative process, rather than as a point at the end of a process. Not just the outcome also the impact in the commuity.
5. We see the role of the designer as a facilitator rather than an expert. Of course there is expertise, she is an expert, you spend a lot of time learning tools like GIS, but in a context of design justice, we are interested in how designers can facilitate community-led practices.
6. We believe than everyone is an expert, so we could return to our algorithmic design. We could come up with something very different if we included people that are impacted by this tools. Instead of developing algorithms less racist, why are we funding risk assessments instead of understanding how communities have been harmed. What the lived experiences of communities can teach us about needs?
7. We share design knowledge and tools with our communities. In the design justice network rather than seeing ourselves as intemediaries, apart from supporting, everything is going to be developed and share
8 We work towards sustainable, community-led and -controlled outcomes. How do we support communites to deal with systematic...
9. We work towards non-exploitative solutions that reconnect us to the earth and to each other. How we design solutions that reconnect us to each other, in the place where we are there is a feel of top-down techno-utopia managerial approach, we are not going to have smart cities if we go to ecological colapse.
10. Before seeking new design solutions, we look for what is already working at the community level. we honor and uplift traditional indigenous and local practices. The anti-solutionism of arturo escobar (colombia) in his work on design for the pluriverse: whereas in the past development was about global systems of the north that would replace indigenous systems, then there was a critique of developent. And today design is replacing "development" right now. We are interested how existing indigenous solutions can be amplified.

Marta: 2018-2019. How we used design justice principles into biennals?
Bienal ciutat oberta:
We used design justice because the challenge was too great. Mayo thought about opening the nomenclator, to try to think from a gender prespective and an intersectional approach to provide us a deep aprroach to what is happening to the nomenclator.
We used the nomeclature of streets in ciutat oberta through the analytical tool of design justice to pull the threads of the names of the streets: around 300 streets about Antonio Lopez, one of the greatest colonizers from the city, described as a business man - not a colonizer, not even a military.

2nd biennal:
Design justice was a device that helped us to design the debate. Insted of having we had the matrix of domination to analyse policy making and try to improve it. Then we transalted the principles to spanish and catalan. And we tried to define eah of the terms to make them easier to understand to people that are not that familiar with the concepts.
Good actions are not enough, we have to make it even better.
We created a fanzine:
2nd part: Looking thorugh the sharing cities action by the design justice principles lenses. How can it be improved?
In small groups of 2 or 3 people, we have 10 minutes to go around the space. each of you look at the design justice principles, pick one of them, travel around and find, bring back, an image, flyer, poster, picture, object, something that really goes against that principle or supports it. We want to check the relation between design principles, to what degree they support, challenge or go against them.
- The sharing cities stand is a gathering of cities that are trying to find solution to current challenges of the platform economy and its disruption. These platforms united to digital engagemet could provide better outcomes. The historical role of the social economy is increasing in this period.
- The principles of the sharing cities declaration (Mayo reads all the principles)
- Appliying a decolonizing lenses all over the declaration to include not only western. Only inclusion without
- Labour who can really access the labour market, a lot of them of global north-cities people are not going to be even able to reach the market,
-All these principles emerge on how we live today. the way we express to deal with them relates to how we are living now. Principles sometimes stay too fix, and maybe they ahaver to be modified. We need some tools to reach these things. Thats a challenge to design. We are very used to speaking, and in polcy making. We need to design
- There's no really connection to non-exploitive solutions and citizens reconected to earth. Just n6, but it is more about circular economy than really sustainability and reinforcing our realtion with nature. Cities is were we have a lot of pollution, and it is not osmething realetd to mobility, we dont just need to focus on circular economy, but also reinvert this trend, There is no realtion of sharing cities and the principle 9 of design justice.
